Mile-Long Yellow Ribbon |
|
In 2005, as a way to honor the men and women who have given their lives in defense of freedom, and to remember those deployed in battle whose fates remain unknown, Matt asked communities across America to join him in creating a Mile-Long Yellow Ribbon to be signed by every youth who so desired, as a symbol of appreciation for soldiers' devotion to the ideals we cherish. In 2006 sections of the ribbon were unveiled at the Green Hills Memorial Day Observance to encircle families of veterans.
Matt traveled with the ribbon on a cross-country speaking tour of 14 states, while team leaders gathered signatures in other states. On September 13, 2006, Congressman Rohrabacher sponsored a press conference at the Pentagon and ribbon signing ceremonies at the White House and the Capitol. Later that year, President Bush signed the ribbon and personally honored Matt at LAX airport with the Presidential Call to Service Award.
When the ribbon was complete in 2007 with over 10,000 signatures, FedEx shipped the 450-pound crate to troops in Iraq, who cut from it smaller ribbons. Each soldier kept a signature with the knowledge that young Americans were thinking of them. |
